I’m VP of Sales at AngelList Talent. I run a team that manages client relationships with tech companies looking to hire on our recruiting platform. I’m building the sales infrastructure and strategy to help our company scale.

How big is it?

A director of business who manages 8 AEs and looking to double, 4 AMs and 4 CSMs that work closely with our team.

Where are your teammates located?

We used to have offices in SF and NY but since the pandemic we’ve moved to a remote global model with team members all over the world. Most of the sales team is in LA, NY, Boston. Half of our engineering team is in Europe.

What does your team do? What are you responsible for?

My team manages all revenue for AngelList Talent’s recruiting tools. We handle relationships on the demand side for companies who are looking to hire, from startups to post-IPO. Our focus is on companies hiring for tech roles: software engineers, product managers, data scientists, designers, and sales.

Autonomy. Ownership. Communication. 

AngelList Talent has always had a strong remote culture where we hire people who work like founders - we share this article with all interviewers. We were split across NY and SF so moving remote wasn’t a huge change. The best part of moving to full remote was increasing our ability to hire international team members and even shifting our recruiting tool to help other US companies hire worldwide.

We understand that working in a fully remote environment has its challenges compared to when we were in an office. We want our staff to feel as though they have the opportunity to meet people (both their team and from other teams) to build bonds across the organization. 

We also do pulse checks to see what our staff thinks we are doing well and where they have concerns or suggestions for improvement through surveys and slack integrations. We also love to keep up with the Zoom activities.

Connecting outside work for newer hires is a current challenge of mine since we’ve hired a lot of new teammates who never got the opportunity to meet while we were in office. 

Despite being in a pandemic, we have found opportunities to have teams travel (while being COVID conscious) to work together and spend time together while on location (hiking, fly fishing, horseback riding, and other fun activities to spend time away from their screens).

We love starting meetings with personal wins and professional wins. Our Monday Morning Meeting kicks off with how we spent our weekend and usually leads to what to binge on Netflix.

I love personality tests so we’ve done 16personalities.com, Tarot cards, and more recently we implemented the Predictive Index across the entire internal organization. 

We’ve increased our spot recognitions that allow team members to nominate each other for gifts when they complete a project or hit a milestone.

I love Audible and our leadership team is constantly sharing different books to read. My recent favorite is The Making of a Manager by Julie Zhou.
