HQ is Pasadena, CA but team members are remote across the US.
What does your team do? What are you responsible for?
Our team handles the entire product suite ranging from content capture, event management tools for our contractors, internal tools for event management.
What are the components of a strong remote culture?
It all starts with great top-down communication so the company understands the core vision of the company. If we all believe in the same vision, we can find creative ways to realize that vision in our respective departments and lanes.
I would stress empathy for your coworkers as another key component. With remote work, it’s difficult to really see what others are contributing especially in different lanes and therefore easy to discount their efforts. It helps to give them the benefit of the doubt and look to lend a hand if possible.
We should strive to respect each other as we’re all working to realize the vision of the company.
Strong remote cultures are built on strong connections. Strong connections are built with Hailey.
How do you make sure your team is happy and engaged in their work?
I check in with the people I work with to see how their day is going.
I want to know how they are doing personally and professionally as I rely on them to bring our product to life.
What's your biggest challenge as a remote leader?
It’s difficult to know how people are doing or what they may be going through as I may not work with my teammates every day.
I want to know how they are doing personally and professionally as I rely on them to bring our product to life. I try to ask how they are doing and invite local coworkers to go to social events (pickup soccer, happy hour, trivia nights).
Haven’t tried this, but this sounds like a good idea.

Resources for remote leaders
I follow thought leaders on Twitter, watch interviews of established leaders, and read books on product development and management.
More specifically, I follow Andy Johns’ presentations on growth, Shreyas Doshi on general product management, Julie Zhuo (read her book Making of a Manager), and Peter Thiel's Zero to One book.
