I’m a Recruitment Lead at Beacon Talent. We’re a corporate recruitment consultancy that helps growth-stage companies hire at scale.

How big is it?

Organizationally, we’re 21 people. 14 are in our core Delivery team, and the other 7 manage operations, finance, sales, and marketing. 

Where are your teammates located?

New York; California; Colorado; Arizona; Philadelphia; and some in the Philippines. 

What does your team do? What are you responsible for?

I run a recruitment operations team that is responsible for sourcing, evaluating, and coordinating candidates.

Flexibility and awareness. You have to make folks feel part of the team. That means flexible meeting times to accommodate folks across time zones, recording things so folks can pick it up if they can’t make a meeting, and heavy documentation so we’re working well asynchronously.

Helping tech leaders hire and scale fully engaged teams is core to our product offering – it’s our north star. Keeping people happy and engaged is about 1) being really transparent about the goals and financials of the business, 2) aligning individual objectives with the greater mission and vision, and 3) carving out time to listen, celebrate, and even reflect on losses, together.

In the beginning, we definitely over-indexed towards scheduling formal zoom meetings. But now, we’ll just pick up the phone and call a colleague on their cell or even Slack. If they’re free, they’ll pick up. It’s created more intimacy and flexibility across the team. No meeting, just go for it.

Virtual happy hours; Friday virtual coffee meetings; Built-in Slack games (ie. Riddles, word jumble, etc), and in-person happy hours.

Sometimes, we’d open a meeting with meditation for 2 minutes. Or some “elevator music” as folks trickle into meetings.

I read a lot of memoirs and business biographies, but raw experience, honest conversations, and reflection have been my ultimate teacher.
